Pak, US discuss regional situation

Pakistan today said that it was looking for openness and transparency in its relationship with the US, demanding a genuine appreciation of its role.

The demand was made by Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan during his meeting with US Special Representative for Pakistan and Afghanistan James Dobbins.

Dobbines, how is on a visit to Pakistan, also met Advisor to Prime Minister on National Security and Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz.

Overall regional situation came under discussion during the meeting, which was also attended by US Ambassador to Pakistan Richard Olson, the Interior Ministry said in a statement.

"Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan emphasized the need for openness and transparency in relationship and demanded a genuine and honest appraisal and appreciation of Pakistan's role without which the relationship can never be substantive or proactive," it added.
 

During his meeting, Aziz empahsised on the importance Pakistan attaches to deepening bilateral cooperation with the US in all fields, a statement by the Foreign Office said.

The Adviser underscored the pivotal role and scope of strategic dialogue and closer collaboration in areas from counter-terrorism to economy to energy and education.

The importance of deeper consultations between Pakistan and the US on regional issues, especially Afghanistan, was stressed during the meeting.
