Pakistan has assured Sri Lanka of support at international forums ahead of a key UN vote on the country's human rights record.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif gave this assurance while meeting the Sri Lankan president's special envoy Nimal Siripala de Silva in Islamabad.

De Silva is Sri Lanka's Cabinet Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources Management.

Sharif also extended an invitation to Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa to visit Pakistan.

Pakistan's assurances came ahead of an impending UN Human Rights Council resolution against Sri Lanka in March.

India had voted in favour of both previous Sri Lanka resolutions moved by US against Sri Lanka.

Pakistan is a member of the 47 member council.

Pakistan and Islamic nations in the SAARC region backed Sri Lanka in both previous resolutions in 2012 and 2013.

Pakistan supported Sri Lanka in its military campaign to end the LTTE's armed movement for a separate Tamil homeland in the north and east of the country.

Sri Lanka is currently engaging countries who are supportive of the island ahead of the March's UNHRC sessions.

Sri Lanka accuses the Western nations of backing the LTTE's separatist intentions by raising human rights charges against its government.

President Rajapaksa stresses that the international community needs to stand by Colombo by allowing time and space to have its own process of human rights accountability.
