The decision was made by the federal cabinet during a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf, an official statement said.
"The cabinet in-principle approved to increase the seats for non-Muslims in assemblies proportionate to their population," the statement said.
The cabinet formed a committee comprising the Law, Interfaith Harmony and Religious Affairs Ministers to submit a report on the issue at the next cabinet meeting.
A small number of seats in the parliament and provincial assemblies are currently reserved for members of minority communities like Hindus, Sikhs, Christians and Parsis.
Hindus are the largest minority in Pakistan's population of 180 million.
There are no official figures for the number of Hindus in the country though the Pakistan Hindu Council estimates their population at seven million.
