Although the International Olympic Committee has issued a stern warning to Pakistan that it could face suspension for continued government interference, the warning appears to have fallen on deaf ears.
The Interim committee constituted by the state controlled Pakistan Sports Board held a meeting in Islamabad today in which heads of national sports federations and participating units were invited to discuss arrangements for the 32nd National Games.
Asif Bajwa, who heads the interim committee which is opposed to the Pakistan Olympic Association headed by Arif Hasan and recognised by the IOC, said the meeting had given approval for dates of the national games.
Interestingly the POA has already held the 32nd National Games in Lahore a few months back after which the PSB formed the interim committee saying many affiliated units and federations were not able to take part in the Games.
The IOC two days back made it clear that it was closely monitoring affairs in Pakistan and if government continued to interfere in national Olympic association matters, the country could face suspension from the Olympic Games and other international events.
To make matters worse an affiliated unit of the POA which is opposed to Arif Hasan, also held its elections during the meeting and announced office bearers for the Islamabad Olympic Association.
"The situation is getting worse and despite our efforts no one is taking the IOC warning seriously. In the end Pakistani sportsmen and women will suffer," Arif Hasan said.
