A 30-year-old Pakistani man in Dubai has been sentenced to death for trafficking four kilogrammes of heroin, a media report said today.
The man, identified only by his initials W A, was found guilty of possessing and trafficking heroin by Dubai Court of First Instance yesterday.
He was arrested in a sting operation when a police officer posed as a prospective buyer of the drugs for 100,000 dirhams (USD 27,000).
The heroin was found inside a laptop bag, according to the Gulf News.
Court records said the man smuggled the heroin inside four elastic bandages he wore on his legs when he arrived in Sharjah.
Yesterday's ruling remains subject to appeal within 15 days.
The last time the death sentence was reportedly handed out in a drug trafficking case before a Dubai court was in November 2003 when two Iranian sailors were handed the penalty for smuggling, possessing and trafficking two tonnes of cannabis.
