The inmates of Pakur jail today did not have breakfast and some of them even refused to appear before the local court demanding medical facility after death of a fellow prisoner.

Kamisan Kisku (34), a resident of Paliyapaha Khukri tola under Maheshpur police station of the district, who was suffering from epilepsy, was rushed to the Sadar Hospital after his health deteriorated last evening, Jail Superintendent N K Singh said.

Kisku, a murder case accused lodged in the jail since 2013, died soon after his admission in the hospital, he said.

The jail inmates, however, claimed that Kisku died in the jail premises itself due to lack of medical facility in the jail premises and staged protest.

They refused to take breakfast while 19 undertrial prisoners, who were to be produced in the court today, refused to go demanding adequate medical facility, a jail official said.

The protest was withdrawn only after the district administration ordered a probe by a committee headed by Additional Collector Sudhir Bara and Deputy Superintendent of Police (HQ) Surendra Prasad Singh, the official said.

The post-mortem of the victim would be conducted by a medical team under camera.
