Palanpur: theft suspect dies in police custody

A man, arrested in connection with a theft, today allegedly committed suicide in the police custody at Varahi police station in Patan distrct.

Police said that 30 year-old Sumar Sindhi tore up rugs and mat to make a rope, and hanged himself in the toilet.

Sumar, who worked as a load carrier, was a father of two children and hailed from Amarapur Pati.

His uncle, Suleiman Sindhi, said police had picked up Sumar earlier too, and last night he was summoned in connection with a theft case.

"He was beaten up by the police which resulted in his death," Suleiman alleged.
 

"A policeman at the police station had earlier threatened to kill him and his brother Hamil Sindhi," Suleiman told reporters.

Patan Superintendent of Police Parixita Rathod said, "We have just received the post-mortem report. The report has said that he died of asphyxiation, caused by suffocation. The family has taken away his body for last rites.
