Palestinians in the Gaza Strip fired a rocket into southern Israel today, but no one was hurt the army said.

"A rocket fired from the Gaza Strip hit southern Israel," a statement said. "No injuries reported."

Israeli media said at least one other rocket was fired but fell within the coastal Palestinian territory.

The last rocket to hit Israel was on July 16 and was answered within hours by an Israeli air strike. Neither caused any casualties.

Last summer, Israel went to war against the Islamist Hamas, the de facto power in Gaza, with the aim of stamping out cross-border rocket and mortar attacks.

The 50-day conflict killed about 2,200 Palestinians, most of them civilians, and 73 on the Israeli side, most of them soldiers.

It also caused heavy damage to Gaza's infrastructure and destroyed or damaged tens of thousands of homes.
