A community panchayat here has threatened to launch an agitation if the authorities failed to arrest a Sub Divisional Magistrate accused of abetting the suicide of a police official last week.

The panchayat was convened yesterday in which several people took part and demanded the arrest of SDM Ramotar Gupta for abetting the suicide of Bijender Singh who was posted under him.

The panchayat threatened to launch an agitation if the SDM was not arrested within a week.

Gupta was booked under section 306 (Abetment of suicide) of IPC following a complaint lodged by the son of the deceased on March 3.

The body of Bijender Singh was found hanging from a tree on March 2. He had left behind a suicide note in which he claimed that he took the extreme step due to "harassment" by the SDM, police said.

Gupta, however, has denied the allegation.
