The Madras High Court today directed a two-member advocates' committee to monitor steps taken on the panel's recommendations for maintaining the Anna Centenary Library, established by the previous DMK government and sought to be shifted by the AIADMK dispensation to another location here.
After perusing the compliance report filed by Tamil Nadu government on the report of the committee, the court said it still had a number of 'concerns' and directed the advocates' committee to inspect and find out whether the recommendations made by it had been carried out or not.
It rejected the state government's claim that appointing staff to the library was a policy decision and ordered it to attend to the issue urgently.
The report also mentioned about the repairs carried out and all other discrepancies that were rectified as mentioned in the advocates committee recommendations.
Issuing the directives during the hearing of a PIL, the first bench, comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice T.S. Sivagnanam, posted it for further hearing to October 29.
"On perusal of the compliance report, we still have a number of concerns," the bench said.
Petitioner Manonmaniam, a retired professor, has challenged the state government order of November 2011 proposing to shift the library, considered a showpiece of the previous government, from its present location in Kottupuram to the Directorate of Public Instruction (DPI) complex in Nungambakkam in the city.
The court had earlier stayed the shifting of the library.
On August 25 last, the court had passed an order directing the government to implement the recommendations of the committee and file a compliance report.
