The suspected militant fired from a pistol after police noticed him moving in suspicious circumstances in the town, 52 km from here, they said.
However, no one was injured in the incident, they said.
The officials said the police exercised maximum restraint and did not fire back to avoid civilian causalities.
Taking advantage of the commotion, the suspected militant escaped.
