A panther died after it was hit by a vehicle in Udaipur district today.

A five-year-old female panther died after an unidentified vehicle hit it in Gordhan Vilas Police Station area. A case has been registered in this matter, range forest officer, Surendra Kumar, told PTI.

"The panther might have come on the road from the neighbouring forest area of Khartina. Degradation of habitat and lack of prey in the forest force them to move out of their territory," he said.

Panthers are endangered animals listed under Schedule 1 of the Wildlife Protection Act and matter will be probed, Kumar said.

Babulal Jajoo, state in-charge of animal rights body People for Animal, said nearly 150 panthers have been killed in Rajasthan in the last one year. Around 25 panthers have died in road accidents alone.
