In rising cases of man-animal conflict, a panthress was today killed by a mob in Banswara district of Rajasthan after the feline entered into human habitation and preyed on a goat to feed her newly-born cubs.

The four-year-old wild cat veered into Nagawra village in Arthuna panchayat here and attacked the goat. The incident was witnessed by the villagers, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Banswara, A S Gothwal said.

Angry locals of the tribal-belt armed with sticks, stones and other farming tools attacked the panthress and killed the animal.

We are searching for the dead feline's cubs, Gothwal said.

We will take them in our custody whereas the remains of the panthress will be consigned to flames following postmortem examination, he said.

Though a mob was involved in killing the panthress, we are trying to identified the suspects. An FIR will be registered under relevant sections of the Wild Life Act, the official added.
