As the national capital grapples with a chikungunya outbreak, Lok Sabha member Pappu Yadav today inspected Lok Nayak Jaiprakash Hospital here and alleged that its preparedness to tackle the health crisis is "not up to the mark".
The Madhepura MP visited the 2,000-bedded hospital, the biggest under the Delhi government, in the afternoon, including the fever clinics and fever wards.
"The city is dealing with rising number of dengue and chikungunya cases, so I came to assess the preparedness at this hospital. After seeing the situation here, I can see a lot needs to be done, as the preparedness is not up to the mark," Yadav alleged.
The Lok Jan Adhikar Party leader alleged that "in a few wards patients were cramped up," and also suggested authorities to "increase" the number of service counters.
"Patients told us the problems they are facing. We also saw a male member and a female member from two different families being made to share a bed," he alleged.
"Whatever Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain has been claiming about Delhi hospitals being all prepared to tackle the crisis, I saw its reality today. Volunteers and counsellors are not deputed adequately and patients visiting the hospital for the fist time feel hassled," he alleged.
"We will hold a protest tomorrow outside the Health Minister's house," Yadav said.
Jain has, however, asserted that all Delhi hospitals are adequately equipped to handle the crisis triggered by the mosquito menace.
LNJP Hospital Medical Superintendent J C Passey, however, claimed, "Our fever clinics are crowded as we are getting on an average 750 patients per day. But, our fever wards still have not reached 100 per cent occupancy."
According to a municipal report released today, the number of chikungunya cases in the city has risen to 2,625. At least 15 deaths have been reported at various hospitals due to chikungunya complications.
Dengue has claimed 19 lives and affected over 1,300 people in the national capital.
