In its 17th report on 'Working of National Commission for Women and State Commission for Women' which was tabled in Parliament today, the Committee on Empowerment of Women has made this recommendation.

"The Committee are constrained to note that there is a total lack of coordination between the state Commissions and the National Commission for Women. At present, there is no mechanism in place to ensure the networking between NCW and the state Commissions," the panel said in its report.

The panel in its report observed that though the NCW meets the state commissions twice every year, these meetings were not mandatory. It suggested that these meetings should be made mandatory and be held every month.

"Better coordination between NCW and the state commissions is a pre-requisite for a conducive environment for women," the panel observed.

The Committee recommended that the NCW should be connected with all state commissions through a state-of-art broadband network.

"The Committee also recommend that a coordination cell be set up at the National Commission for Women to coordinate with states, collect and compile data and ensure feedback/sharing of information," the panel said. The government had earlier told the Committee that NCW had established video-conferencing facility to co-ordinate with state commissions.

The Commission also criticised the Women and Child Development Ministry for sitting on the NCW proposals seeking enhancement of power.

"The Committee have learnt that the Commission has asked for certain additional legal/ investigative powers and these are pending with the Government for long," the panel said. (More)
