Par panel takes stock of welfare measures for Tihar jail women

Parliament's Committee on Women Empowerment today took stock of welfare programmes for female inmates in Tihar jail.

"The parliamentary committee inspected Jail No. 6, which is the prison for women consisting of 675 prisoners. The committee interacted with the women prisoners and officials of Tihar Jail," a statement issued by Delhi government said.

It said that the jail administration informed the committee about various activities and welfare programmes meant for women prisoners.

The committee was informed by the jail authorities that the women prisoners were being empowered through skill development and various vocational activities.

Many of the inmates were also pursuing their education from jail, the statement said, noting they even pursued studies through correspondence courses by getting enrolled in Indira Gandhi National Open University and National Institute of Open Schooling.
 

"More educated prisoners teach the other less educated prisoners. The number of students doing various courses from IGNOU this year upto end of October 2014 was 51," it said.

Director General Central Jail, Tihar and DIG Prison were present to apprise the committee, it added.
