Noting that the Right to Education Act had brought about a paradigm shift, Railways Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal today said that the legislation tasks teachers with a sacred and important responsibility.

Speaking at the 57th annual convocation of the Government College of Education, Sector 20, here today, the Chandigarh MP called upon teachers to lead by example and be honest at all costs.

He urged them to be ethical professionals and righteous members of society who desist from doing anything which went against their conscience, whatever be the compulsions.

"It is only in the periods of trial and tribulations that the true strength of character of an individual comes out," the minister said.

He asked graduating teachers to inculcate a reading habit in children, saying it had "suffered a decline due to excessive television viewing", which had turned many youngsters into couch potatoes.
