The paramedical staff of Government Medical College (GMC) and associated hospitals here held protests today against Director, Health Services, Kashmir, Saleem-ur-Rehman, who is facing charges of molestation of a staff nurse, and demanded his immediate arrest.

"The director should be arrested immediately. We appeal the government to provide justice to the victim, otherwise we will go on an indefinite strike after two days," president of the Nurses Association of GMC and associated hospitals, Syed Rukhsana, told reporters.

She said the charges levelled against the director were very serious and demanded exemplary punishment to the accused.

Rukhsana said they have no faith in the police probe as "such investigations in the past have yielded no results".

"We stand behind our sister. No women would like that her honour becomes a public discussion. It is brave of her to come out and seek justice. We want justice should be delivered," she said.

Last week, a nurse, posted in south Kashmir's Anantnag district, lodged a complaint against Rehman and three other officials - Chief Medical Officer, Anantnag, Nazir Shahdad, Block Medical Officer, Saller, Irshad Tak and Medical Superintendent, Seer, Dr Ashraf - at Shaheed Gunj police station alleging they tried to rape her.
