Pareen shocks top seed Preethi to enter semis of tennis meet

Maharashtra's Pareen Shivekar shocked top seed Preethi Ujjini of Karnataka in three sets to sail into the singles semi-finals of the Rs 1.5-lakh prize money Dreamzkraft Khar Gymkhana All India women's open tennis tournament today.

Pareen, ranked a lowly 140, shocked the 27th ranked Preethi 6-1 4-6 6-1 to enter the last four for a meeting with Haryana's qualifier Himani Mor.

Himani got past Maharashtra rival Nupur Kaul inside an hour, chalking out a 6-0 6-4 victory in another quarter-final match here.

Second seed Jeni Patel of Gujarat survived a scare from qualifier Asha Nandakumar of Karnataka before eking out a three-set win and advance into the semifinals.
 

Jeni, ranked 30, lost the opening set before recovering poise for a 4-6 6-2 6-4 victory over her 127th ranked rival.

The Gujarat girl meets another qualifier Tanushree Palanivel of Tamil Nadu in the semifinals tomorrow. Palanivel got the better of Niku Amin, also from Gujarat and ranked 93, 7-5 6-3 in a quarter-final match.
