Police today arrested the parents of a teenaged girl, who was murdered along with her lover early this week here, and claimed it was a case of honour killing.

Police said Bharti Kushwaha (19) and Naresh Thakur (21), who hailed from Agra, had been in a relationship for the last eight months and wanted to tie the knot. But it was opposed by Bharti's parents as they belonged to different castes.

Despite her parents' opposition, Bharti was in touch with Naresh. This enraged her parents who hatched a conspiracy to kill both of them, Dholpur Superintendent of Police Rajesh Singh said.

"Bharti's father Girraj, mother Jaldevi and their son-in-law Shailendra hatched the plan to eliminate the lovers. As per the plan, Shailendra called the boy and the girl to a place on Agra Road on December 6, promising to make arrangements for their marriage.

"Bharti's parents were already present there and when the girl and the boy reached there, the accused took them to an isolated area in Nagla village of Dholpur and strangulated them," the police officer said.

Bharti's parents have been arrested while Shailendra is on the run, Singh added.
