Family members of an assistant professor in Delhi University, who died in a road accident last year, have been awarded a compensation of over Rs 37 lakh by a motor accident claims tribunal (MACT) here.

MACT directed the SBI General Insurance Company, with which the offending vehicle was insured, to pay a compensation of Rs 37,64,538 to the parents of 26-year-old Karamveer, who died in the accident after his motorcycle was hit by a rashly driven vehicle here on June 8 last year.

The tribunal awarded the compensation while relying on the "unrebutted testimony" of the parents of the deceased and also the documents placed on record.

"In view of the unrebutted testimony of the petitioners (parents) and documents available on record, it is prima facie proved that Karamveer died due to injuries suffered in the road accident caused due to rash and negligent driving of respondent number one (driver of the offending vehicle)," MACT's Presiding Officer Dinesh Bhatt said.

The order came on a petition filed by the parents of the deceased seeking compensation on the ground that Karamveer, an assistant professor on ad-hoc basis at Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College here, had died due to the rash and negligent driving of the driver of the offending vehicle.

They told the tribunal that Karamveer was crushed to death after his motorcycle was hit from behind by the vehicle on Ring Road near Kashmere Gate here.

Karamveer was also called for an interview for the post of lecturer in Rajasthan Public Service Commission besides receiving letters for selection as trainee scientist by the UGC.

The court, while awarding the compensation, observed that, "documents available on record shows that the deceased was highly qualified and had cleared various examinations.
