The man shot dead by police after trying to storm a Paris police station brandishing a meat cleaver has been identified by friends as a Tunisian named Tarek Belgacem, a source close to the investigation said today.

The man, who was wearing a fake suicide vest in Thursday's attack, was arrested for theft in southern France in 2013 but was homeless without documents and had said at the time he was a Moroccan named Sallah Ali.
