Women MPs, officials and other staff working at Parliament have a reason to rejoice as they will soon have access to a creche facility.

The move follows a letter from Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi to Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan last year, pressing her for a creche on the Parliament premises.

The creche will be built over an area of 1,500 square feet and have a separate feeding room for mothers.

"Under the direct supervision of Hon'ble Speaker, creche development work is in progress and a senior official has also been deputed to oversee the work," the Ministry of Women and Child Development said in a statement.

It said the move will set an example of inclusive and supportive work environment for the women employees of Parliament.

The Maternity Benefit (Amendment) Act, 2017 has made it mandatory to have creche facilities at establishments with 50 or more employees.

Gandhi's letter to Mahajan last year had highlighted that it was crucial to have a creche at Parliament as one-third of the officials working there were women.
