An air passenger was today arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle in gold worth Rs 33.5 lakh at Goa airport, which was hidden in voltage converters, Customs department said.
The Air Intelligence Unit of Customs has seized the precious metal from the accused identified as Mohammed Shaffi (26).
"The gold, weighing around 1,380 kg worth Rs 33.5 lakh was seized from voltage converters. Shaffi, a native of Honnavar, Karwar (Karnataka) has been placed under arrest," a Customs release said.
The accused confessed to have smuggled the gold from Dubai in Air India flight, which flew to Goa via Mumbai, it added.
