Union Minister Babul Supriyo today inaugurated a Passport Seva Kendra at Asansol Head Post Office here.

This is one of the 56 Passport Seva Kendras that the Centre had decided open in post offices, Supriyo said after launching the facility.

"It was a long time demand of the local people. I had arranged for three temporary passport camps in Asansol," the Minister of State for Urban Development said.

Supriyo said he had asked External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj in September 2014 for a permanent solution for passport related woes of the people of Asansol and she said she would look into it.

Accordingly, it was decided that 56 Passport Seva Kendras would be opened in post offices across the country, Supriyo said.

West Bengal would have four such Kendras and this is the first of such facilities, he said.

The other three would be opened in Krishnagar, Raiganj and Beadon Street of Kolkata.

Supriyo lamented that no representative of the state government was present on the occasion though many were invited.
