Patient escapes from hospital ward, 'jumps before train'

A patient, undergoing liver treatment at a hospital here escaped from his ward today and allegedly jumped before a running train at the nearby railway station at Uluberia and lost his both legs.

GRP sources said Niranjan Roy, who was suffering from acute abdominal pain and was admitted at nearby Uluberia Hospital, allegedly jumped before Kharagpur Local at the station and had his both legs cut off.

A bleeding Roy was then taken back to the same Uluberia hospital and now admitted to the critical care unit.

Roy had been undergoing liver treatment at the hospital and had complained of acute abdominal pain to his relatives and doctors over the past few days, his family members said.
 

They said he had been feeling depressed.

Roy is a resident of Chengail area of the district.

Conceding it was a lapse on the part of the hospital ward staff and the security team, a top hospital official said a four-member committee has been constituted to find out how the patient escaped without being noticed.
