City police today seized Rs 24.67 lakh of unaccounted cash from a vehicle and detained seven persons during a drive to curb misuse of money and liquor during the Lok Sabha polls, a senior official said.

The vehicle was intercepted on the city's SP Verma Road when a police team stopped it and found a bagful of cash mostly of Rs 500 rupee notes, SSP Manu Maharaj said.

Initially two persons, claiming to be working for 'Rudra Jiwan Cooperative' with branches in several states, were detained, the SSP said.

Police raided the office of the cooperative in the city and detained five more persons, including three women.

"One Santosh from Maharashtra could not account for the money he was carrying, nor he had any proof about its origin. We found out that he and his people took money from villagers for providing livestock. They also functioned as a Non-Banking Finance Company (NBFC) taking deposits in rural areas," said the SSP.

"They have fled with the money when it was the time to pay back. We are investigating the case," the SSP said.

An FIR has been lodged against those detained for possessing unaccounted money and allegedly duping people.
