Veteran actor Patrick Stewart's Twitter profile has been hacked after X-rated messages began popping on his account.

The 76-year-old actor has 2.3 million followers on the social media site, with fans quick to comment as some unsavoury messages appeared on his page.

The first indication that something wasn't right was when his profile picture changed to an image of a blonde girl, while the name read Rebecca Slater.

X-rated messages then began to appear with pictures of scantily clad women, reported Daily Mirror.

The actor was the victim of a porn bot - a spam program most often found in chat rooms which shares suggestive images and links to adult websites.

Stewart's representatives noticed the hack within 10 minutes, with the actor's profile picture then changed back to the generic Twitter egg image.
