A three-member gang today dropped a bag of stolen jewellery worth several crores on a roadside and fled, after a local patrol team arrived at the spot and prevented the robbers from decamping with the valuables in Kolathur here, police said.

The jewellery was stolen from the lockers of City Union Bank and was estimated to be worth several crores of Rupees. Their exact value will be ascertained later, they said.

The gang dropped the bag and fled on seeing the two-member motorcycle patrol team. The bag had several kilos of jewellery, they said.

Meanwhile, the locals noticed a broken window of the bank and informed its officials, including the manager, who rushed to the spot.

Police said the bank did not have a battery backed alarm system for their lockers.
