Pattnaik's 3.5 metre sand sculpture of Lord Ganesh giving out a message for saving the climate, won two gold medals at the art contest in the southern Spanish city of Marbella.

"I used 1000 tonnes of sand and made a sculpture of Ganesh, who is quite popular in this country," Pattnaik told PTI over phone from Spain.

The sculpture showed the deity sitting on a boat and sending out a message of 'Save our Sea Life - Save our Earth from Global Warming'. The theme of the competition was 'Secrets of the Sea'.

"I also innovated a bit by using stones available at the beach along with the sand. The sculpture was quite popular with the people who were visiting the site," he said.

His two prizes came in the "People's choice" category and the "Best positive" sculpture category.

The other three categories were won by artists from Spain and Italy.

Sculptors from 10 countries, mostly European, participated in the seven-day competition.

Pattnaik won a similar championship in Copenhagen last month.
