Paul McCartney and The Stranglers star Hugh Cornwell are set to join 2,000 other musicians in a bid to create the UK's biggest ever band.

The Beatles' legend's former publicity chief Geoff Baker wants to attempt a record-breaking feat at a seaside town in England to mark what would have been Buddy Holly's 77th birthday.

He plans to assemble 2,000 music lovers to play Holly's track 'Rave On!' and set a record for the largest number of guitarists performing at the same time.

The Stranglers frontman Cornwell has already expressed an interest in joining the stunt, dubbed 'Guitars On The Beach', and McCartney has told Baker he wants to fit it in around his current tour dates.

"Paul's on a world tour, so I was surprised to get a letter from him saying he's checking to see if he can fit in the Guitars On The Beach gig," Baker said.
