A pavement dweller was crushed to death allegedly by a speeding car in north Delhi's Kashmere Gate area today.

The driver of the car, identified as Mohsin, a gym instructor by profession, fled the scene leaving the sedan there and he is still at large, police claimed.

The possibility of this being a case of drunken driving has not been ruled out, police said.

A case has been registered and a team has been formed to track down the errant driver, Additional DCP (north) Aslam Khan said.

According to police, they received a call about the incident in the early morning hours and a team was sent to the spot. The victim, whose identity has not been ascertained yet, was rushed to a hospital where doctors declared him dead.

From preliminary investigation, it emerged that the car (Chevrolet Optra) was being driven at a very high speed. The driver lost control over the vehicle and climbed the pavement crushing the man who was sleeping on it.

The vehicle got stuck, for which the accused abandoned it there and fled the spot.

Around two years ago, a speeding SUV, allegedly being driven by a person in an inebriated state, ran over a group of pavement dwellers, close to the spot where today's incident was reported, killing one and injuring 12 others.

The identity of the driver was traced with the help of the registration number of the car, which has been impounded by police. The registered owner had sold the car to Mohsin a few days ago but the documentation is pending.

Other pavement dwellers in the area are being questioned to ascertain the identity of the deceased man.
