Payment of wages to staff only via ECS, cheque: Labour dept

To ensure payment of the notified minimum wages to all categories of workers in the organised and unorganised sectors, the Delhi Labour Commissioner today directed that employers should pay wages to staff through either ECS or cheque.

The Labour Commissioner also directed employers, including contractors, to upload the details for their employees, like category, nature of work, bank account numbers, payment details, etc. On to their websites.

Employers have been given 90 days' time to comply with the directive, according to a statement issued by the labour department.

Also, officials have been directed to discourage deployment of contract workers in regular, permanent and perennial jobs as per rule 25 of Contract Labour (Regulation & Abolition) Central Rules, 1971.
 

"In case it is not possible to (ensure the above), workers of contractors should be paid the same wages as being paid to regular workers for similar work," the statement said.

The labour department is organising regular workshops on occupational safety and health in association with industrial bodies.

The secretary of the labour department has also directed all district officers to adopt a pro-active attitude and make all-out efforts to mitigate the complaints and grievances of workers and ensure their legal entitlements as per provisions of various labour laws.

The statement also added that the department has disbursed an amount of Rs 1,89,31,591 between May 26 and May 30 under various labour laws like Employees Compensation Act, 1923, Delhi Shops and Establishment Act, 1954, Minimum Wages Act, 1948, Payment of Gratuity Act, 1972, Payment of Bonus Act, 1965, Contract Labour Act, 1970, etc., benefiting 186 workers.
