Farmers and farm labourers' unions in Punjab have decided to hold two rallies next month against the "indifferent" attitude of the state government towards their various demands including proper compensation for crop damage.

The two 'Lalkaar' rallies will be held on December 16 and 18 in Barnala and Amritsar, said Bharatiya Kisan Union (Ugrahan) General Secretary Sukhdev Singh Kokari.

The decision was taken by farmers and Khet Mazdoor unions in Ludhiana, he said, adding the state government has failed to resolve farmers' issues despite reminding it several times.

Farmers have been demanding Rs 40,000 per acre compensation for cotton crop loss due to white-fly pest attack, Rs 20,000 per acre to farm laborers, rollback of the Prevention of Damage to Public and Private Property Act, Rs 4,500 per quintal for Basmati 1509 variety and Rs 5,000 for the 1121 variety.
