Punjab Health and Family Welfare Minister Surjit Kumar Jayani today conducted a surprise check at the department's head office here and found 10 officers absent from the duty.
After reaching office at about 9 am, the minister ordered closure of main entrance of the office to catch absentees off-guard.
Jayani examined the attendance of more than 200 employees and found as many as 10 officials absent from office, an official release said.

He found the working of the health directorate "in shambles" and ordered proper upkeep of infrastructure and streamlining other essential services in the department.
The minister also ordered installation of a complaint box within 24 hours at the entrance of the director health office which would be opened weekly for public by the minister himself.
During inspection and random checking of files, Jayani found pendency of small administrative issues of more than two years.
He has asked the Director to ensure disposal of pending cases within 7 days and online monitoring of the files.
