The Punjab Women's Commission has lashed out at a government hospital in Patiala for allegedly asking a woman to vacate the ward immediately after delivering a baby, an official release said today.
Taking suo motu cognizance, Chairperson of the Commission Manisha Gulati summoned the medical superintendent of Rajindra hospital B S Brar directing him along with the concerned doctor to appear before the women's panel on August 7.
Calling it a case of "gross negligence", Gulati also sought a report on the action taken by the hospital administration in the case.
The Commission had taken cognizance after media reports highlighted that the incident happened on Wednesday when the woman, a migrant labourer from Rajpura was admitted to Rajindra hospital, Gulati said.
Within two hours after her delivery, she was asked to vacate the ward in the evening due to shortage of beds, she added.
It was only next morning when an activist saw the woman lying on the floor with her newborn baby that a complaint was lodged with the authorities following which the woman was shifted back inside the ward.
