The Press Council of India (PCI) today said that it has taken "suo motu" cognisance of the "reported attack on media at Patiala House Court" and has sought a report from the Delhi police on the matter.

In a statement, the PCI added that it has also sought a report from the local member of the Council in the matter related to the reported murder of a journalist in Sultanpur in Uttar Pradesh.

"Suo-motu cognizance have been taken of both the incidents seeking discreet inquiry report from the local member of the Council on the first incident (in Sultanpur) and calling for Report from the Delhi Police in the latter," a statement released by the Council said here.

Speaking to PTI yesterday, PCI chairman had said that in the Council's view "attack on journalists doing professional work is not at all acceptable."

Significantly, even as the PCI sought a report from the Delhi Police over the previous incident, a large group of men dressed in lawyers' robes today again barged into the Patiala House court complex and allegedly beat up a journalist and a student ahead of the hearing in the sedition case of JNU students' union president Kanhaiya Kumar.
