A senior PDP leader's son has been booked for allegedly assaulting an official of the Labour department in Ganderbal district, police said today.

According to the police complaint, Ayaz Ahmad Qazi, son of former J&K minister Qazi Afzal, allegedly assaulted the official at Mini-Secretariat here on Wednesday.

Qazi had visited the Commissioner's office seeking some information regarding scholarship under Building Construction Workers Act and got infuriated when he was asked to come later. In a fit of rage, he allegedly thrashed Khan and also ransacked his office, it said.

Ayaz Ahmad Qazi has been booked under section 506 (related to criminal intimidation), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) and 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees or more) of the Ranbir Penal Code, he added.

Meanwhile, a Union of Kashmir Constructional Workers strongly condemned the incident terming it as "unfortunate and uncalled for" and demanded stern action against the accused.

"Such hooliganism in any civilized society is not acceptable and those responsible must be identified and punished as per the law of the land," the Union said.
