Over 1500 employees also gathered at the city Chowk and carried out a protest march, shouting anti-government slogans.
"We have observed a strike today. The state government has failed to fulfill our demands of enhancing the retirement age from 58 to 60, regularisation of daily wagers and removal of pay anamoly," Guffar Dar of Joint Consultative Committee (JCC), under whose banner the protest is being carried out, said.
The protesters called for an intervention by chief minister Omar Abdullah and finance minister A R Rather to resolve the situation.
"If government fails to fulfil our demands, we will be forced to intensify our agitation," Gar said.
About 4.5 government employees in the state have been protesting against the state government to press for their demands. Other demands of the striking workers include removal of pay anomaly and a hike in the emoluments of Anganwadi workers.
