A large number of people today blocked a road near Tirupur, demanding action against policemen who they alleged was responsible for death of a man after his bike hit a median as he sped away from them in a chase.

Police said Suresh and his friend sped away on their two wheeler last night at a checkpost at Chennimalaipalatyam on the district border though police signalled them to stop

Police gave chase for about four km.

The speeding Suresh rammed his bike on an electric post, killing him on the spot and resulting in serious injuries to his friend, they said.

As the news spread, residents gathered in the area early today and resorted to road roko seeking stringent action against police personnel, who they alleged were instrumental for the death of a youth.

They refused to allow police take the body in an ambulance unless they were assured of action against the policemen and adequate compensation to the family of the deceased man.

The protesters dispersed later after police assured them that suitable action would be taken.
