"People using mobile app to book tickets crosses 1 million"

: Southern Railway today said the total number of passengers using the dedicated UTS mobile application facility for booking tickets in the city division crossed the one million mark as of January.

The facility which was launched in April 2015 for the Chennai Egmore-Tambaram suburban section was later extended to the entire suburban section. Later, booking of season tickets was also covered using the mobile application.

In an official release, Southern Railway said the total number of passengers who used UTS (unreserved ticketing system) mobile application was 9,732 in May 2015. It crossed the one million mark totalling 10,31,029 passengers as of January 2018.
 

The Chennai division caters to short distance commuters in which Southern Railway operates 700 services daily. The suburban corridor covers 90 stations in Chennai and its vicinity.

Southern Railway said the optical character recognition machines used for taking print-out from mobile application was available at Chennai Central, Egmore, Tambaram, Beach and Guindy stations.

It was in addition to already available facilities like Automatic Ticket Vending Machine and also at railway UTS counters.
