Hours after he was stripped of Commerce and Industry portfolio, Partha Chatterjee today said people of West Bengal will decide what he has done and urged the Chief Minister to relieve him as Chairman of Haldia Pterochemicals Limited (HPL) Board.

"The people of Bengal will decide what work has been done during my tenure. Whatever decision the Chief Minister has taken for the development of industry is right," he said.

The TMC leader said he has written to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, seeking her permission to resign from the post of chairman, HPL Board.

Chatterjee, who is now left with portfolios of IT, Electronics and Parliamentary Affairs, said he has been given the responsibility of coordinating between the government and the party.

Highlighting the job done by him during his tenure, he said five industrial projects in various parts of West Bengal have been given clearance, out of which three projects were worth Rs 3,102.5 crore.

Banerjee today took away Chatterjee's Commerce and Industry portfolio and gave the key department to Finance Minister Amit Mitra to boost the industrialisation process in the state.

The removal of Chatterjee, TMC General Secretary and considered second in rank in the Cabinet, followed muted criticism of his failure to deliver.
