Pepper haul in border district; man arrested

The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) has arrested a man for illegally bringing over 8,000 kg of black pepper worth over Rs. 67 crore from Nepal.

Rajveer Singh (40) alias Ram Bharose Lal was arrested from Sonauli on the Indo-Nepal border last evening on a tip- off that he was bringing some goods from the neighbouring country in an illegal manner, Deputy Commandant of SSB, Rajesh Paul said.

A total of 8357.125 kg of black pepper worth Rs.67.78 crore kept in 314 bags in a truck were recovered and the truck driver Rajveer Singh arrested, the Deputy Commandant said.

Singh told SSB that he used to illegally bring black pepper from Nepal and supply it in Ghaziabad district. He confessed to having sold one quintal of black pepper to a dealer at the rate of Rs 500 per kg.
 

He was handed over to the police and a case was registered against him, the SSB official added.
