: A case has been registered against a family here for alleged negligence in leaving their pet dog tied in an apartment without without food and water for nine days "resulting" in its death, police said Thursday.

The case was registered under IPC Section 429 (mischief by killing or maiming cattle) and relevant sections of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act on complaint by Humane Society International-India against the family, the police said.

The dog died due to possible starvation in the absence of the family who were reportedly on a holiday, the complainant alleged.

According to the complainant, HSI India consultant, Teja Panneru, the matter came to light on the social media on November 17, when the residents of the building complained about the dog being in an unconscious state.

Police said the neighbours had also complained of a 'foul' smell emanating following the dog's death and further claimed that the family was given notice on the ill-treatment of the dog earlier.
