A petition was submitted to Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit urging him to take up with the Railway Ministry the introduction of the Thanjavur-Thanjavur circular line covering the Cauvery delta region and important pilgrim centers.
In his petition, Arupathy Kalyanam, leader of the Mayiladuthurai-Tarangambadi Train Restoration Committee stated that during the 18th Century,Tarangambadibecame Denmark's chief overseas settlement.
During the British regime, train service was introduced betweenTarangambadiand Mayiladuthurai in 1921 and theSouthern Railway stopped thetrainservice in 1984 despite stiff opposition from the public representatives, he said in the petition.

This would benefit thousands of people, traders, students and pilgrims. Important pilgrim centers like Thirukkadaiyur, Tirunallar, Nagore and Vailankanni will be connected directly with other parts of Nagapattinam, Thanjavur and Tiruvarur districts," the petition said.
