A petition was moved before Calcutta High Court today seeking formation of a special investigation team (SIT) for probing the brutal gangrape and murder of a college girl at Barasat on June 8.

The Public Interest Litigation, which also prayed for monitoring of investigation by the high court, was moved before the division bench of Chief Justice Arun Mishra and Justice Joymalyo Bagchi.

The petition would be taken up for hearing by the bench tomorrow, Rabishankar Chatterjee, counsel for the petitioner, said.

The petition also prayed for investigating the overall criminalisation of Barasat, the district headquarters of neighbouring North 24 Parganas which is just 25 km away from the metropolis.

A compensation of Rs 50 lakh to the next of kin of the girl has also been prayed for, Chatterjee said.

Barasat, on the highway to Bongaon border with Bangladesh, has witnessed a number of gangrapes, murders and other heinous crimes in the past few years.

The hapless girl, daughter of a daily wage-earner, was returning home after an university examination on Saturday afternoon when a group of hooligans pounced on her on the deserted road and dragged her into a room inside a walled premises, where a factory is to be constructed.

The 20-year old was gangraped and brutally murdered before dumping the body on the wayside.

Three persons, including the caretaker of the premises have been arrested in connection with the incident.
