A petition seeking to direct the union government not to implement the Direct Benefit Transfer of LPG subsidy system (DBTL) was filed before the Madras High Court bench here today.
Petitioner S M Ananthamurugan, an advocate, also prayed for a directive to the government not to take steps to implement the "bank account-based" domestic LPG connection.
He submitted that the central government should be directed to provide domestic refill LPG cylinders to the public following the earlier system.
He alleged DBTL was unwarranted and useless and would affect the poor the most as most of them did not have bank accounts and were not in a position to get the government LPG subsidy. As the Centre could not insist on Adhaar card,they are now using the backdoor method by insisting on DBTL, he said.
If the government really wanted to weed out ineligible LPG connection holders, it should conduct a fair assessment and find the persons living Above the Poverty Line and hand over their details with the gas agency and cancel their subsidy, he said.
The case will be taken up for hearing tomorrow.
