Police in Northern Ireland are deploying water cannons after coming under attack from explosive devices in a fourth night of violence in Belfast.

Around 1,000 extra police officers have been called in to help keep the peace in Belfast after Northern Ireland's annual mass marches by the Orange Order brotherhood descended into chaos on Friday. More than 40 police officers and a senior lawmaker have been injured in three days of violence.

Northern Ireland police confirmed that several explosive devices have been thrown at officers today, adding that no injuries have been reported.

The force appealed for calm, saying that water cannons were being deployed and that at least one plastic bullet has been fired to quell the unrest.
