Without naming any party or individual leader, Congress spokesperson Rashid Alvi said, "No political leader appreciated this step of cutting down the petrol hike. It gives us an idea of the line of thinking of the opposition parties. Political parties should have a positive approach".

Pointing out that not only the Opposition parties but even UPA ally Banerjee dismissed the cut saying it was done with an eye on the Presidential election and would be increased later, Alvi said, "I am making a general statement and did not take anyones name".

He at the same time stressed, "when prices of petrol were increased, reactions were as if heavens have fallen but when the prices have been cut down, it has been ignored as if nothing has happened".

Reacting to the cut in petrol price, Banerjee had said on Thursday, "the price has come down because of the Presidential election. They will increase the price later".

BJP and Left have also dismissed the cut saying much more needed to be done.

The Congress spokesperson also sought to claim a high moral ground on the issue of Sonia Gandhi declining to accept Prime Ministership in 2004 saying, "Gandhi made a sacrifice. Hardly any one in the history had declined an offer like the one to become Prime Minister."

He made the remarks while reacting to former President APJ Abdul Kalam's comments in his book that he was ready to swear in Sonia as Prime Minister even amid opposition from a section of the political class.

Alvi said, "some persons had tried to mislead the country even then and they are doing the same now. History reminds us that people, who make sacrifices are remembered and not those who make insinuations". (MORE)
