The Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) mourned the passing away of golfing legend Arnold Palmer today.
Palmer, who passed away aged 87, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania yesterday, was a part of 'The Big Three' of golf during the 1960s, along with fellow American Jack Nicklaus and South African Gary Player. The trio is widely credited with popularising the sport around the world.
Nicknamed "The King", Palmer had 95 professional wins to his credit and was also a successful businessman and golf course designer.
His seven Major wins included four Masters titles in 1958, 1960, 1962 and 1964, the US Open in 1960 and the British Open in 1961 and 1962.
He played on six Ryder Cup teams and was the winning captain twice.
Uttam Singh Mundy, Director, PGTI, said, "We at the PGTI express our deepest condolences to the family of Mr. Arnold Palmer, one of the sport's greatest personalities. His passing away is a huge loss for the sport of golf. Arnold Palmer's achievements inspired golfers across the world over the last several decades and his legacy will continue to live on."
PGTI members also paid tribute to Palmer with their condolence messages.
